OEM style 3-piece roller bearing replacing the OEM 8990 ball bearing, used as the rear outer cam bearing from 2001 onwards.
OEM replacement reference 8983.
Note: H-D redesigned the Twin Cam rear outer cam bearing, moving from ball bearings (OEM 8990/A) to a roller bearing style (OEM 8983/MCS 921138) in 2001. This was done to help prevent ball bearing failures, specifically in the rear cams (transmission side) which carry greater load. This 01-up style roller bearing is a stronger 3-piece design than a conventional roller bearing. No other parts were changed during the bearing modification. Earlier 99-00 style ball bearings will still fit both the front and rear cams of all 99-06 models. Using front and rear ball bearings presents no issues on gear-driven cams.
