This is the Powerglide featuring a solid bronze alloy bush as a safety element, instead of a conventional roller bearing. There are no other differences between the standard Powerglide and the Steady Roll Powerglide tappets. Full bearing contact provides greater stability, longer service life, and quieter operation thanks to the tighter tolerances enabled by this bush design. The main drawback of a worn needle bearing is that the rollers eventually break, scattering steel needles throughout the engine. This problem no longer exists. Even when the Steady Roll bronze bush wears, the design remains safe. Like all other Jims Powerglide™ tappets, this Steady Roll version offers superior hydraulic performance compared to OEM-style components, featuring a forged steel body, a hand-ground hydraulic cavity, and an oil-fed shaft. For maximum power, you must have zero valve lash and eliminate hydraulic element collapse, as occurs in the OEM unit, also known as the "shock absorber syndrome." Not keeping the valve open throughout the entire stroke results in power loss. Jims Powerglide tappets come as close as possible to a solid tappet, yet remain capable of compensating for thermal expansion. They also work well with solid-style camshafts. Fits as an oversized replacement for 18523-86A.
