Many OEM starter motors have an unprotected needle bearing on the outside of the drive shaft seal; moisture can and does enter the electric motor's output cover and travels along the armature shaft to the needle bearing, corroding the r  
Rick goes further and installs a ball bearing  
with double seals, with the drive shaft seal on the outside of the bearing in his new aftermarket replacement unit  
This simple application of logical engineering fulfils two functions: first, the outer bearing is now protected against harmful water ingress, and second, the sealed ball bearing can be replaced
