Why separate lubrication in 2-stroke engines?
In a two-stroke engine, oil does not circulate through the sump as in a four-stroke engine. It is injected into the air/fuel mixture via an oil pump. The gearbox and clutch are lubricated with a specific oil, as they do not receive engine oil.
For two-stroke motorcycles, a multipurpose SAE 10W-40 motorcycle oil, formulated for clutch and gearbox, is normally used. In high-demand applications, a specific two-stroke gearbox oil, 80W-90 API GL-5, can be used.
