S&S, 4-3/8" stroke flywheel kit for Softail, 07-17

96/103/106/110/117 engines with standard 4-3/8" stroke. S&S connecting rods do not have tapered wrist pin ends and are not compatible with standard H-D pistons or standard H-D pinion shaft bearings. Balanced to a total piston weight of 1035 grams.
Note: Engines with strokes over 4" may require S&S piston oil jets and clearance notches between piston and jet in the piston skirt to avoid contact.
Note: S&S crankshafts allow the use of replaceable bearing bushings at the bottom of the connecting rods. The first generation of S&S crankshafts, in use until 2012, had a diameter of 1.500". The second generation of crankshafts, in use since 2013, has the larger OEM diameter crankshafts of 1.671". S&S and OEM crankshafts are now identical in diameter, meaning S&S parts can be used to rebuild standard H-D flywheels, which was previously not possible as H-D rebuild parts were not and are not available.
Note: The following applies to 03-17 models. S&S has designed these flywheels to work with a Timken style pinion shaft bearing; they fit 99-02 stock models and all S&S crankcases without modifications. Stock 03-17 H-D Twin Cam engines use the same pinion shaft roller bearing as the pinion shaft, a cheaper but weaker solution. It is possible to use the weak stock 03-17 pinion shaft bearing kit (OEM H-D 24004-03B) with S&S flywheels in 03-17 stock crankcases. However, S&S believes this roller bearing will not withstand the side loads produced in a high performance engine. S&S will not honour any warranty claim in an application where the 03-17 OEM 24004-03B/24605-07 pinion shaft roller style bearing assembly is used. To upgrade to the pre-2003 pinion shaft bearing style, the MCS 978517 JIMS conversion tool kit is available. This kit includes one tool, one Timken bearing and one steel crankcase bearing insert for one engine. Bearing inserts are available separately as 978519, and bearings separately as 508960.
Note: In all applications, the technician must be able to assess the components to determine their suitability in combination with the other engine components, prior to installation. It is important that a qualified mechanic installs them and makes the necessary adjustments.
