This is the Powerglide with a solid bronze alloy bushing as the safety element, instead of a conventional roller bearing. There are no other differences between the standard Powerglide and the Powerglide Steady Roll lifters. The full bearing contact provides greater stability, longer service life and quieter operation thanks to the tighter tolerances this bushing design allows. The main disadvantage of a worn needle bearing is that the rollers eventually break up, spilling steel needles throughout the engine. This problem no longer exists. Even when the Steady Roll bronze bushing wears, the design remains safe. Like the other Jims Powerglide™ lifters, the Steady Roll version offers superior hydraulic operation compared to OEM-style units, a forged steel body with hand-ground hydraulic cavity and an oil-fed axle. For maximum power, zero valve lash and elimination of hydraulic element collapse are required, as occurs in the OEM unit, also known as 'shock absorber syndrome'. Failure to keep the valve open throughout its travel results in power loss. Jims Powerglide lifters come as close as possible to a solid lifter, yet remain able to compensate for thermal expansion. They also work well with solid-style camshafts. Fits as a direct replacement for 18523-86A.
