Natural finish with cylinders painted black. The engine includes a cast cam cover, 3-5/8" bore forged high-displacement pistons, and is equipped with a Super E carburettor kit, an S&S Super Stock ignition system and a 3 5/8" x 4-1/2" stroke. This alternator/generator engine is basically an Early Shovel engine on the right-hand side, with all the generator drive gears and the timing case. The engines come with a special reverse-rotation timing case drive gear, allowing their use with late-style ignition systems, 70-99 models, as these rotate in the opposite direction. With the late Shovel-style left crankcase, the more modern and reliable 70-84 style alternator charging system can be used. If no generator is used, it is an excellent place to install a cartridge oil filter. Another advantage is that all 4-speed transmissions from 70 onwards, 5-speed or even 6-speed, can be used.
Note: All S&S Shovelhead engines contain an Evolution style camshaft and tappets.
